SINGAPORE, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- A 12-meter sabre rattling "monster" got defeated by a young boxer, with the help of his friends. This scene can not only be found in fairy tales but also seen on the stage of the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games in the Marina Bay here on Saturday.
This scene was witnessed during the sixth chapter of the performance in the opening ceremony, when a seven-meter storybook titled "Champion" appeared in the middle of the stage and opened to reveal a boy in his bedroom. He aspired to become a champion boxer and shadowboxed in his dream.
As he shadowboxed, a monster, represented the inner fear and struggle, appeared as an animation on the screens. The monster then multiplied into mini monsters to attack the young boxer.
The boy stood up to fight the sabre rattling "monster" and had to summon a bunch of friends to confront it. After several unsuccessful attempts, like in the battle between David and Goliath, the boy overcame the monster with his slingshot. Through unity in strength, the boy learnt to face and overcome his deepest fears.
As IOC president Jacques Rogge said in a press briefing on Saturday morning, it was a ceremony for the young athletes, who for the first time in Olympic history were brought in early and given the best seats in the stands to enjoy the show that had been put up for them.
